Did you know.....
....that from October 1st 2007 you won't
be allowed to advertise for a bright young thing to breathe a breath
of fresh air into your team. Or a dynamic self-starter full of energy
and youthful exuberance.
You also won't be able to promote Jenny
because she's twenty-five (on the grounds that her colleague Dennis
is a bit long in the tooth).
This is down to new legislation, part
of the European Employment Directive, designed to outlaw age discrimination
in the workplace. Put another way, you won't be able to use someone's
age against them, either in recruitment, promotion or training.
Retirement ages below 65 will generally
be banned and, as an employer, you will need to consider requests
from your staff to work beyond this age.
The legislation is being shaped by the
Age Advisory Group and is on its way through final stages of consultation
now. Alliance is the only risk broker actively involved in the Age
Advisory Group and is working to influence government to minimise
the implications to businesses of this and other regulation.
Alliance can assess your business to reveal
the impact this and other legislation, such as Disability Discrimination
and Asbestos Regulations, may have on the way you work.
